Cassin, 1865

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From 600 - 1,500 m, occasionally 50 - 2,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. May form a superspecies with Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • anneae Cassin, 1865   -  Caribbean foothills from Costa Rica east to western Panama (Volcán de Chiriquí­).
  • rufivertex Salvin, 1866   -  Both slopes in Panama (from Veraguas) east to extreme north-western Colombia (area of Cerro Tacarcuna, in foothills west of Gulf of Urabá).
