Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. Proposed subspecies loetscheri (described from Dos Amates, north-east of Catemaco, in Veracruz) considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
gouldi Sclater, 1857 - Gulf-Caribbean slope of Mexico (southern Veracruz east to southern Quintana Roo, south to northern Oaxaca and northern Chiapas) south through northern Guatemala and Belize to Honduras.
praetermissa (Peters, JL, 1929) - Extreme south-eastern Honduras, eastern Nicaragua, eastern Costa Rica (locally also on Pacific slope in Guanacaste) and north-western Panama (north-western Veraguas).
