Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowlandand dry forest, subtropical and tropical dry and moist shrubland. From sea-level - 1,000 m, occasionally up to 2,250 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. May form a monophyletic species group with Yellow-crowned Euphonia (Euphonia luteicapilla), Purple-throated Euphonia (Euphonia chlorotica) and Trinidad Euphonia (Euphonia trinitatis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • olmecorum Dickerman, 1981   -  Ulf slope of Mexico from southern Tamaulipas and eastern San Luis Potosí­ south to northern Chiapas.
  • godmani Brewster, 1889   -  Pacific slope of Mexico from south-eastern Sonora south to central Guerrero.
  • affinis (Lesson, 1842)   -  Yucatán Peninsula and Cozumel I south through Belize and Guatemala to northern Honduras; Pacific slope of Mexico from western Oaxaca southern along coast to north-western Costa Rica (Guanacaste).
