Subspecies
Molecular data indicate that this genus and Hemithraupis are closely related and probably sister-taxa, and that Heterospingus also is closely related to them.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

titanota Olson, 1981 - Caribbean slope of northern Costa Rica from Alajuela (vicinity of Cerro Santa Maria) southern along eastern base of Cordillera Central and Cordillera de Talamanca to area of Panama border.
chrysomelas (Sclater & Salvin, 1869) - Western Panama (western Chiriqu�� east to vicinity of Cerro Campana, in western Panam�).
ocularis Nelson, 1912 - Eastern Panama from Cerro Jefe (and Pacific slope in eastern Panam� and Dari�n) east to extreme north-western Colombia (Cerro Tacarcuna).
