Subspecies
Molecular data indicate that this genus and Hemithraupis are closely related and probably sister-taxa, and that Heterospingus also is closely related to them.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • titanota Olson, 1981   -  Caribbean slope of northern Costa Rica from Alajuela (vicinity of Cerro Santa Maria) southern along eastern base of Cordillera Central and Cordillera de Talamanca to area of Panama border.
  • chrysomelas (Sclater & Salvin, 1869)   -  Western Panama (western Chiriquí­ east to vicinity of Cerro Campana, in western Panamá).
  • ocularis Nelson, 1912   -  Eastern Panama from Cerro Jefe (and Pacific slope in eastern Panamá and Darién) east to extreme north-western Colombia (Cerro Tacarcuna).
