Subspecies
Affinities within genus uncertain. Resembles Santa Marta Warbler (Myiothlypis basilica) in head pattern.

Proposed subspecies melanotis (described from Costa Rica) is treated as synonym of chitrensis, and perijanus (from Sierra de Perijá, in Venezuela) synonymized with auricularis. Recently described population in Serranía de San Lucas area of Colombian Andes may represent an undescribed subspecies, being brighter and more extensively yellow on underparts than auricularis.

The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • chitrensis (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Costa Rica and western Panama.
  • tacarcunae Chapman, 1924   -  Vicinity of Cerro Tacarcuna, on Panama-Colombia border.
  • daedalus Bangs, 1908   -  Western Andes and western slope of central Andes in Colombia (southern from Antioquia) and Ecuador (south to Canar).
  • auricularis Sharpe, 1885   -  Eastern Andes and eastern slope of central Andes in Colombia and adjacent south-western Venezuela (Zulia and Táchira).
  • meridanus Sharpe, 1885   -  Andes of western Venezuela (Lara south to Táchira).
  • bessereri Hellmayr, 1922   -  Mountains of northern Venezuela (Yaracuy east to Miranda).
  • pariae Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1949   -  Paria Peninsula (Cerro Azul and Cerro Humo), in north-eastern Venezuela.
  • baezae Chapman, 1924   -  Eastern slope of Andes in Ecuador (south to eastern Chimborazo and western Morona-Santiago).
  • tristriatus (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Andes from southern Ecuador (Loja and Zamora-Chinchipe) south to central Peru (Cuzco).
  • inconspicuus J. T. Zimmer, 1949   -  Andes from south-eastern Peru (Puno) south to north-western Bolivia (La Paz). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yungas Warbler (Basileuterus punctipectus).
  • punctipectus Chapman, 1924   -  Andes of central Bolivia (eastern La Paz and Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yungas Warbler (Basileuterus punctipectus).
  • canens J. T. Zimmer, 1949   -  Andes of south-central Bolivia (western Santa Cruz). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yungas Warbler (Basileuterus punctipectus).
  • sanlucasensis Salaman, 2015   -  Serrania de San Lucas (Bolívar, north central Colombia).
