Subspecies
Affinities within genus uncertain. Has been considered most closely related to Prairie Warbler (Setophaga discolor) and Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus). Has hybridized with Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata) (of nominate subspecies).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
palmarum (Gmelin, 1789) - Breeds central and south-central Canada from Northwest Territories and Alberta east to Ontario; migrates to Florida, Caribbean (mainly Bahamas and Greater Antilles) and, in smaller numbers, Usouthern Atlantic coast and eastern coast of central Middle America.
hypochrysea (Ridgway, 1876) - Eastern Ontario (locally) and western Quebec east to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and north-eastern United States (northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Michigan, Maine); migrates to Gulf of Mexico coast from Texas east to western Florida.
