Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru.

Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Has been suggested as forming a superspecies with Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus), Saffron-billed Sparrow (Arremon flavirostris), Golden-winged Sparrow (Arremon schlegeli) and Black-capped Sparrow (Arremon abeillei).

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • saturatus Cherrie, 1891   -  Caribbean slope of south-eastern Mexico (southern Veracruz, northern Oaxaca, north-eastern Chiapas and Tabasco), northern and central Guatemala (Petén, Alta Verapaz and Izabal) and Belize.
  • rufidorsalis Cassin, 1865   -  Caribbean slope from Honduras south to extreme north-western Panama.
  • aurantiirostris Lafresnaye, 1847   -  Pacific slope of Costa Rica and both slopes of Panama (east to Canal Zone).
  • strictocollaris Todd, 1922   -  Extreme eastern Panama and adjacent Colombia (northern Chocó).
  • occidentalis Hellmayr, 1911   -  Pacific slope of western Colombia (southern from middle Atrato Valley) and north-western Ecuador.
  • erythrorhynchus Sclater, PL, 1855   -  Northern Colombia in upper Sinú Valley, lower Cauca Valley and middle Magdalena Valley.
  • spectabilis Sclater, PL, 1855   -  South-eastern Colombia (Putumayo) south through eastern Ecuador to north-central Peru (San Martí­n).
  • santarosae Chapman, 1925   -  South-western Ecuador southern from Chimbo Valley.
