Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Sometimes considered to include Niceforo's Wren (Thryophilus nicefori) as a subspecies.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • transfinis (Lafresnaye, 1845)   -  Extreme southern Mexico (Chiapas).
  • rufalbus (Lafresnaye, 1845)   -  Highlands of Guatemala and El Salvador.
  • sylvus (Phillips, AR, 1986)   -  North-western Honduras.
  • skutchi A. R. Phillips, 1986   -  Western Honduras southern on Pacific slope to Panama (east to Canal Zone, also locally on Caribbean drainage).
  • cumanensis (Cabanis, 1861)   -  Northern Colombia and northern Venezuela (Falcón east to Parí­a Peninsula, south to eastern Guárico and southern Anzoátegui).
  • minlosi von Berlepsch, 1884   -  North-western Venezuela (western Zulia, and Cojedes south to southern Táchira and western Apure) and eastern Colombia (south to Meta).
  • castanonotus Ridgway, 1888   -  Pacific slope of Nicaragua to Costa Rica and western Panama.
