Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,350 - 3,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama.

Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Russet Nightingale-Thrush (Catharus occidentalis), but the two occur sympatrically with no evidence of interbreeding. Geographical variation very slight. Some subspecies may be merged in due course.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • omiltemensis Ridgway, 1905   -  South-western Mexico.
  • nelsoni Phillips, AR, 1969   -  South-central Mexico.
  • chiapensis Phillips, AR, 1969   -  Southern Mexico east to western Guatemala.
  • alticola Salvin & Godman, 1879   -  Southern Mexico (south-eastern Chiapas) and southern Guatemala.
  • juancitonis Stone, 1931   -  Northern El Salvador and Honduras.
  • waldroni Phillips, AR, 1969   -  Northern Nicaragua.
  • frantzii Cabanis, 1861   -  Costa Rica.
  • wetmorei Phillips, AR, 1969   -  Western Panama.
  • confusus Phillips, AR, 1969   -  Mts. of south-eastern San Luis Potosí to north-eastern Hidalgo, north-eastern Puebla and northern Oaxaca.
