Subspecies
Subspecies typica, darienensis and minor sometimes considered to constitute a separate species, with small size and vocal characters suggesting possibly closer relationship to Spot-throated Woodcreeper (Certhiasomus stictolaemus) than to Amazonian populations of present species. Birds from north-western Colombia (Córdoba) possibly intergrades between darienensis and minor. Amazonian subspecies more uniform morphologically, but song of nominate differs so markedly that remaining three may warrant species status as Deconychura pallida, with zimmeri and connectens as subspecies. Populations in Andean foothills of eastern Ecuador apparently belong to connectens, but adjacent lowland birds possibly subspecies pallida. Further study is required.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • typica Cherrie, 1891   -  Southern Honduras (isolated site), and north-central and south-western Costa Rica east to central Panama (Chiriquí, Veraguas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Little Long-tailed Woodcreeper (Deconychura typica).
  • darienensis Griscom, 1929   -  Eastern Panama and adjacent north-western Colombia.
  • minor Todd, 1919   -  North-central Colombia (Santander).
  • longicauda (Pelzeln, 1868)   -  The Guianas and northern Brazil, north of Amazon, from R Negro east to Amapá.
  • connectens Zimmer, JT, 1929   -  Western and north-western Amazonia, north of Amazon, from eastern Colombia and southern Venezuela south to eastern Peru (west of R Ucayali) and north-western Brazil (upper R Negro).
  • pallida Zimmer, JT, 1929   -  Southern Amazonia, south of Amazon, from eastern and south-eastern Peru (east of R Ucayali) east to central Amazonian Brazil (eastern at least to R Tapajós) and south to northern Bolivia and northern Mato Grosso. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Long-tailed Woodcreeper (Deconychura pallida).
  • zimmeri Pinto, 1974   -  South-eastern Amazonian Brazil, south of Amazon, from at least R Tocantins (possibly from R Tapajós) east to Maranhío.
