Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Appears to be related to obligate ant-followers, e.g. Phlegopsis, Rhegmatorhina. Described subspecies chocoanus (eastern Panama, north-western Colombia) appears indistinguishable from nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
saturatus (Richmond, 1896) - Eastern Honduras (Gracias a Dios, Olancho) south to Costa Rica (Caribbean slope, in north also Pacific slope) and extreme western Panama (western Bocas del Toro).
mcleannani (Lawrence, 1860) - Central and eastern Panama (east from Veraguas on Caribbean slope, Panamá on Pacific slope) and north-western Colombia (south along Pacific slope to Valle del Cauca, and on northern Andean slope in Córdoba and Antioquia).
