Subspecies
Close relationship with Spot-backed Antbird (Hylophylax naevius) and Dot-backed Antbird (Hylophylax punctulatus) suggested by morphology, vocalizations and nest architecture. Birds from western Colombian lowlands described as subspecies subsimilis, but considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
capnitis (Bangs, 1906) - Caribbean slope from Honduras south to Costa Rica (ranging to Pacific slope in north-west) and western Panama (east to Coclé, ranging to Pacific slope in Veraguas).
naevioides (Lafresnaye, 1847) - Eastern Panama (both slopes eastern from Colón and Panamá), northern and western Colombia (east to César and Santander on northern slope) and western Ecuador (south to Guayas and Chimborazo).
