Subspecies
Genus probably close to Masius. Has also been suggested as possibly sister to Heterocercus on basis of display behaviour and nest architecture. Probably forms a superspecies with White-throated Manakin (Corapipo gutturalis). Western subspecies altera and heteroleuca sometimes treated as a separate species, on basis mainly of greatly reduced outer primary.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-bibbed Manakin (Corapipo leucorrhoa).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
altera Hellmayr, 1906 - Caribbean slope of Central America southern from eastern Honduras, Pacific slope of southern Costa Rica and Panama (except western Chiriquí), and north-western Colombia (west of Atrato Valley). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-bibbed Manakin (Corapipo leucorrhoa).
heteroleuca Hellmayr, 1910 - Pacific slope of south-western Costa Rica and western Panama (western Chiriquí). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-bibbed Manakin (Corapipo leucorrhoa).
