First Described (Guide)
Gould, 1851

Habitat
Mature subtropical forest. From 800 - 2,100 m in the breeding season and from 100 - 500 m during non-breeding season.

Range (Guide)
Costa Rica (B) (NB), Panama (B) (NB).

Mountains and surrounding foothills and lowlands of Costa Rica (eastern from Cordillera Guanacaste) and Panama (east to Veraguas).
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to banana and, more recently, to pineapple plantations, expansion of cattle-ranches and logging, are the main threats.

Food
Mainly frugivorous. But also anoles, frogs and large insects.

Voice
Displaying males deliver low and far-carrying 'hooom' hoots, accompanied by other staccato notes. Calls include grunts and coughs.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

May form a superspecies with Amazonian Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus ornatus) and Long-wattled Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus penduliger) and all three suggested by some as being possibly conspecific, but this considered unlikely.
