Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Probably belongs in subfamily Fluvicolinae, but further study is required.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
leuconota (Lafresnaye, 1842) - South-eastern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua south to western Colombia and western Ecuador.
fuscicapillus (Sclater, PL, 1862) - Eastern Andes of Colombia, northern Ecuador and extreme north-eastern Peru (mouth of R Curaray).
poecilonota (Cabanis, 1849) - South-eastern Venezuela (south of R Orinoco and in Amazonas) and the Guianas.
niveiceps Zimmer, JT, 1930 - South-eastern Ecuador, Peru (San Martín south to northern Puno) and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba).
colonus (Vieillot, 1818) - Central and eastern Brazil (from Marajó I and southern Maranhío south to southern Mato Grosso do Sul and northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
