Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies, and sometimes considered conspecific, with Highland Elaenia (Elaenia obscura), possibly also including Great Elaenia (Elaenia dayi).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

ultima Griscom, 1935 - Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
frantzii Lawrence, 1865 - Nicaragua, Costa Rica and western Panama.
pudica Sclater, PL, 1871 - Mountains of northern Colombia and northern Venezuela (except Santa Marta and Perij�), also through eastern Andes of Colombia into western Venezuela (north to Lara).
browni Bangs, 1898 - Northern Colombia (Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta) and north-western Venezuela (Sierra de Perij�).
