Subspecies
Unpublished molecular data suggest that genus is closely related to Chapada Flycatcher (Suiriri affinis). All members of genus formerly treated as conspecific, but vocal and plumage data support existence of three species, possibly more. Additional study needed in order to resolve species limits. Nominate subspecies (perhaps with atrirostris) possibly a separate species from others. Subspecies tortugensis doubtfully distinct from pallens.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

arenarum (Salvin, 1863) - Costa Rica and western Panama.
atrirostris (Lawrence, 1871) - Pearl Is (off southern Panama) and northern Colombia.
glaber Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868 - Northern coast of Venezuela (including Margarita I and Patos I), Trinidad (including islands of Chacachacare and Monos) and northern parts of the Guianas.
pallens Zimmer, JT, 1941 - Cura��ao.
tortugensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1946 - I La Tortuga, off northern Venezuela.
orinocensis Zimmer, JT, 1941 - Central Orinoco valley in southern Venezuela and eastern Colombia.
