Subspecies
Genus was previously merged with Phylloscartes, but cranial and syringeal evidence suggest relationships elsewhere within Tyrannidae, perhaps near Phaeomyias and Nesotriccus. Vocal similarities suggest relationship with Inezia subflava-caudata group.

Proposed subspecies amazonus (the Guianas, northern and east-central Brazil), described on basis of very few specimens, appears to be not reliably distinguishable from cerula in larger series of specimens and therefore merged with latter.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • semiflava (Lawrence, 1865)   -  Southern Nicaragua south to eastern Panama, including Coiba I.
  • leucophrys von Berlepsch, 1907   -  North-central Colombia (Sucre east to Magdalena Valley) and north-western Venezuela (base of Sierra de Perijá south to Táchira and western Mérida, and south-western Lara).
  • magnirostris Hartert, 1898   -  South-western Ecuador (Pichincha south to Guayas and El Oro).
  • cerula Wetmore, 1939   -  Locally east of Andes in Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, northern Brazil (eastern Amazonas and R Branco east to Amapá), eastern Ecuador, south-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
  • flaveola (Lichtenstein, 1823)   -  Eastern Bolivia (northern Santa Cruz) east to eastern and south-eastern Brazil (Pernambuco south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
