Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • schistaceiceps (Sclater, PL, 1859)   -  Southern Mexico (from southern Veracruz) south to Panama (east to Canal Zone).
  • superciliaris (Lawrence, 1871)   -  Northern, western and central Colombia (Caribbean coast, Magdalena and Cauca Valleys, in middle Dagua Valley on Pacific Andean slope, and south to western Meta on eastern slope).
  • griseolus (Todd, 1913)   -  Northern and central Venezuela and extreme eastern Colombia.
  • sylvia (Desmarest, 1806)   -  Extreme northern Brazil (along R Branco), Guyana and French Guiana.
  • schulzi (von Berlepsch, 1907)   -  North-eastern Brazil (south-eastern Pará east to Piauí­).
