Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,700 m, occasionally to 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina (B), Belize (B), Bolivia (B), Brazil (B), Colombia (B), Costa Rica (B), Ecuador (B), French Guiana (B), Guatemala (B), Guyana (B), Honduras (B), Mexico (B), Nicaragua (B), Panama (B), Paraguay (B), Peru (B), Suriname (B), Venezuela (B).

Eastern and southern Mexico (Veracruz, Oaxaca) through Central America to Colombia, whence southern on Pacific slope to western Ecuador, and east through northern Venezuela to the Guianas, then south through eastern and southern Brazil to north-eastern Argentina and Paraguay; eastern Peru (Loreto) and northern and eastern Bolivia (Beni to Santa Cruz).
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Spizastur melanoleucus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) is transfered to the genus Spizaetus following SACC (2006) and AOU (2007).

Monotypic genus, very similar to Old World Hieraaetus.

No subspecies.
