Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Aruba, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, USA (B), Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 6,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Birds of Baja California formerly separated in subspecies inferior.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • texensis Lawrence, 1857   -  South-western USA south to central Mexico.
  • micromeris Oberholser, 1914   -  Northern Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.
  • littoralis Brodkorb, 1940   -  Southern Mexico south through Central America to Costa Rica and possibly Panama.
  • acutipennis (Hermann, 1783)   -  Colombia east through Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago and the Guianas and south through Brazil (absent from many parts of Amazonia) to northern Bolivia and probably Paraguay.
  • crissalis Miller, AH, 1959   -  South-western Colombia.
  • aequatorialis Chapman, 1923   -  Western Colombia, western Ecuador and possibly north-western Peru.
  • exilis (Lesson, R, 1839)   -  Western Peru and rarely extreme northern Chile.
