Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Heliodoxa. Subspecies spectabilis may be a separate species, on basis of morphological differences and geographical isolation. Populations within southern portion of range of nominate have been separated as subspecies viridiceps, but validity highly dubious and no consistent differences are apparent.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
fulgens (Swainson, 1827) - South-western USA (south-eastern Arizona, south-western New Mexico, south-western Texas) through most of Mexico to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and north-eastern Nicaragua.
spectabilis (Lawrence, 1867) - Highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama.
