Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 700 - 1,500 m.
Costa Rica.
Highlands of northern and central Costa Rica: Caribbean slope, reaching Pacific slope in upper parts of northern Cordillera de Guanacaste and northern Cordillera de Tilarán.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Eupherusa. Species has occasionally been awarded monospecific genus Lawrencius. Population of Cordillera de Guanacaste (northern Costa Rica) probably deserves recognition as a separate subspecies.
