Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 800 - 2,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies emiliae has often been merged into apicalis. Species name frequently emended to "guyi", but this is unjustified.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • coruscus Bangs, 1902   -  Costa Rica to north-western Colombia.
  • emiliae (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1846)   -  Colombia (major river valleys).
  • apicalis (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Eastern Andean slopes from northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela to south-eastern Peru.
  • guy (Lesson, 1833)   -  Trinidad and north-eastern Venezuela.
