Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua.

Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

In a tunnel in an earth bank or quarry or well.

Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • superciliosa (Sandbach, 1837)   -  South-eastern Mexico (from Campeche across northern half of Yucatán Peninsula).
  • bipartita Ridgway, 1912   -  Southern Mexico (Oaxaca, Chiapas) and Pacific slope of Guatemala.
  • vanrossemi Griscom, 1929   -  Interior Guatemala.
  • sylvestris Carriker & Meyer de Schauensee, 1935   -  Caribbean lowlands of Guatemala.
  • euroaustris Griscom, 1929   -  Caribbean lowlands of northern Honduras.
  • apiaster (Lesson, R, 1842)   -  El Salvador, western Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.
  • australis Bangs, 1906   -  Pacific lowlands of south-western Nicaragua and north-western Costa Rica.
