Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• underwoodi Bangs, 1908   -  North-western Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris).
• aurantiiventris Gould, 1856   -  Humid montane forests of central Costa Rica to western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris).
• flavidior Bangs, 1908   -  Western Panama (extreme eastern Chiriquí on Cerro Flores).
