Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Tripsurus, along with Golden-naped Woodpecker (Melanerpes chrysauchen), Yellow-tufted Woodpecker (Melanerpes cruentatus) and Yellow-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes flavifrons). Forms a superspecies with Golden-naped Woodpecker (Melanerpes chrysauchen), or both sometimes included in the superspecies represented by last two. Northern populations sometimes separated as subspecies perileucus, with supposed tendency towards stronger white barring on upperparts and wings, but much overlap occurs with southern populations and racial separation considered not sustainable.
