Subspecies
Subspecies hypospodius has been considered separate species. Birds of Honduras and Nicaragua formerly awarded separate subspecies, nicaraguae, but now included in nominate leucophrys.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

leucophrys (Gould, 1844) - Southern Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala, Honduras, eastern El Salvador and western Nicaragua.
hypospodius Salvin, 1896 - Northern Costa Rica.
