Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, heavily degraded former forest, plantations. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • meserythrus (Sclater, PL, 1860)   -  Southern Mexico, Belize to south-eastern Nicaragua.
  • modestus (Cabanis, 1869)   -  Costa Rica, western Panama.
  • capnodes Wetmore, 1963   -  North-western Panama.
  • poliocephalus (Aldrich, 1937)   -  Western & central Panama.
  • panamensis (Carriker, 1910)   -  Central & eastern Panama.
  • harterti (Brabourne & Chubb, C, 1914)   -  Western Colombia, western Ecuador.
  • caucae (Chapman, 1912)   -  North-central Colombia.
  • mustelinus (Bangs, 1905)   -  North-eastern Colombia, north-western Venezuela.
  • andrei (Brabourne & Chubb, C, 1914)   -  North-eastern Venezuela, Trinidad.
  • soui (Hermann, 1783)   -  Eastern Colombia to the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil.
  • caquetae (Chapman, 1915)   -  South-eastern Colombia.
  • nigriceps (Chapman, 1923)   -  Eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru.
  • inconspicuus Carriker, 1935   -  Central & eastern Peru to eastern Bolivia.
  • albigularis (Brabourne & Chubb, C, 1914)   -  Northern & eastern Brazil.
