Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest. From 500 - 2,500 m.
Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

bonapartei Gray, 1867 - North-central Colombia, western Venezuela.
frantzii (Lawrence, 1868) - Costa Rica, western Panama.
intercedens Salvadori, 1895 - West-central Colombia.
discrepans Friedmann, 1947 - East-central Colombia.
plumbeiceps Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922 - East-central Ecuador, extreme northern Peru.
