Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From sea-level - 3,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela.

Vagrant to Chile.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
May hybridize with Golden-bellied Grosbeak (Pheucticus chrysogaster) in Ecuador.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • meridensis Riley, 1905   -  Andes of south-western Venezuela (Mérida).
  • uropygialis Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1871   -  Colombia in eastern Andes (Norte de Santander south to Cundinamarca).
  • crissalis Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1877   -  Andes of south-western Colombia (Nariño) south to central Ecuador.
  • terminalis Chapman, 1919   -  Lower Andes of Peru (Amazonas and Cuzco).
  • aureoventris (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Southern Peru (Puno), southern and eastern Bolivia (La Paz south to Tarija) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy south to San Luis and Córdoba); also, probably only in austral winter, west-central Brazil (western Mato Grosso) and northern Paraguay.
