Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 800 m, occasionally up to 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Bay-headed Tanager (Tangara gyrola) and replaces it in lowlands of wet Choco-Pacific region.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • cara (Bangs, 1905)   -  Extreme eastern Guatemala (Puerto Barrios), Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica south to Panama (to San Blas).
  • dalmasi (Hellmayr, 1910)   -  Locally on Pacific slope of Panama (Chiriquí­ and Veraguas east to eastern Panamá).
  • lavinia (Cassin, 1858)   -  Extreme eastern Panama (eastern Darién) and southern along Pacific slope of Colombia (from northern Chocó), including Gorgona I, to western Ecuador (Pichincha).
