Highland subspecies phelpsi differs in numerous ways from nominate, and may merit separate species status.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • xanthogastra (Sclater, 1851)   -  Eastern Colombia (from Meta and Vaupés) east to southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas and south-western Bolívar), south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, western Brazil (east to R Negro, middle R Juruá and upper R Purús), and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba).
  • phelpsi Zimmer, JT, 1943   -  Southern Venezuela in northern Amazonas and northern and eastern Bolívar (from lower R Caura east to Uei-tepui, on Brazilian border). Also eastern Guyana.
