Subspecies
Molecular data indicate that this species is most closely related to Opal-rumped Tanager (Tangara velia) and Opal-crowned Tanager (Tangara callophrys). Subspecies caelicolor intergrades with paradisea in eastern Venezuela and Guyana. Subspecies caelicolor often misspelt "coelicolor" but former is the original spelling.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • paradisea (Swainson, 1837)   -  South-eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil (south to northern bank of R Amazon).
  • caelicolor (Sclater, PL, 1851)   -  Eastern Colombia (Meta, Guainía and Vaupés), southern Venezuela (Amazonas) and north-western Brazil (R Uaupés and upper R Negro).
  • chilensis (Vigors, 1832)   -  Southern and south-eastern Colombia (western slope of eastern Andes in upper Magdalena Valley, in Huila; and Caquetá, Putumayo and Amazonas) south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and Bolivia (south to Santa Cruz), and east through western Brazil (east to Rondônia, south-eastern Amazonas eastern Mato Grosso and south-eastern Pará).
  • chlorocorys Zimmer, JT, 1929   -  Northern Peru (upper Huallaga Valley).
