Subspecies
Although genus traditionally placed next to Tangara in linear taxonomic sequences, genetic data, together with glistening plumage, leg morphology, and voice, indicate that the two genera are not closely related. Sight records of this species in western Venezuela may refer to subspecies bourcieri or to an undescribed subspecies.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • bourcieri (Bonaparte, 1851)   -  Southern Colombia (western slope of eastern Andes in Cundinamarca south to head of Magdalena Valley, in Huila; eastern slope of eastern Andes southern from Caquetá) south to eastern Ecuador and eastern slope in northern Peru (Huánuco south to Huallaga Valley).
  • calliparaea (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Eastern slope of Andes of Peru (Pasco south to northern Ayacucho).
  • fulgentissima Chapman, 1901   -  Eastern slope of Andes of southern Peru (from Cuzco) south to Bolivia (south to north-western Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Blue-throated Tanager (Chlorochrysa fulgentissima).
