Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been merged with Euphonia. Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that both genera belong in family Fringillidae. Nominate subspecies extremely isolated geographically. Other subspecies may be better split off as a distinct species. Subspecies psittacina, frontalis and minuscula are all very similar, and may not warrant subspecific separation.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • psittacina Bangs, 1902   -  Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
  • frontalis (Sclater, PL, 1851)   -  Mountains of northern Venezuela (Falcón and Lara east to Miranda).
  • minuscula Hellmayr, 1922   -  Mountains of north-eastern Venezuela (Anzoátegui, Monagas and Sucre).
  • intensa Zimmer, JT, 1943   -  Western slope of western Andes (in Caldas and Valle), in Colombia.
  • longipennis (Du Bus de Gisignies, 1855)   -  Andes from western Venezuela (southern from southern Lara) southern generally through Colombian ranges (except western slope of western Andes), Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia (to Cochabamba and western Santa Cruz).
  • roraimae Salvin & Godman, 1884   -  Tepuis of southern Venezuela (Amazonas and Bolívar) east to Guyana and in mountains of extreme north-western Brazil (R Padauirí, on Venezuela border).
  • cyanea (Thunberg, 1822)   -  South-eastern Brazil (southern from southern Bahia) south to eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
