Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. The two subspecies are so similar that species may be better treated as monotypic.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • humilis (Cabanis, 1861)   -  Extreme south-eastern Mexico (Palenque, in Chiapas) very locally east to central Guatemala and southern Belize and northern Honduras, and southern on Caribbean slope from eastern Nicaragua to Panama, and on Pacific slope from south-western Costa Rica east to Panama (Veraguas), northern base of Andes in Colombia (east to central Magdalena Valley) and southern on entire Pacific coast to north-western Ecuador (to southern Pichincha).
  • minuta Cabanis, 1849   -  Eastern base of Venezuelan Andes (in Táchira) and south-eastern Colombia (from Meta and Vaupés) south through Ecuador and Peru to central Bolivia (Santa Cruz), and generally eastern across southern and eastern Venezuela, the Guianas, and Amazonian Brazil (east to mouth of R Amazon, and south to southern Amazonas and central Pará; once in eastern Mato Grosso).
