Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. May form a monophyletic species group with Scrub Euphonia (Euphonia affinis), Yellow-crowned Euphonia (Euphonia luteicapilla) and Trinidad Euphonia (Euphonia trinitatis) and has in the past been regarded as conspecific with Trinidad Euphonia (Euphonia trinitatis), but differs in habitat and in female plumage. Geographical distribution of some subspecies poorly defined, and ranges listed below somewhat tentative. Further study is required.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • cynophora (Oberholser, 1918)   -  Western and southern Venezuela (southern Táchira, and east to Amazonas and Bolívar east to R Caura and R Cuyuní) south to eastern Colombia (Meta), probably also northern Brazil (northern Roraima).
  • chlorotica (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  The Guianas and north-central and eastern Brazil (eastern and southern Amapá, and south of R Amazon from R Tapajós east through northern Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais to Bahía and Espírito Santo).
  • amazonica Parkes, 1969   -  Both banks of R Amazon eastern from south-eastern Colombia and extreme north-eastern Peru to north-central Brazil (R Tapajós, at Santarem).
  • taczanowskii Sclater, PL, 1886   -  Lowlands in northern Peru (vicinity of R Marañón, both eastern and west of river) and extreme south-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
  • serrirostris d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837   -  South-eastern Bolivia and southern Brazil (from southern Mato Grosso, southern Goiás and Rio de Janeiro) south to Paraguay, northern Uruguay, and northern and central Argentina (south to Buenos Aires).
