Subspecies
This species, Anisognathus flavinucha and Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus notabilis) were formerly placed in a separate genus, Compsocoma. Usually treated as conspecific with Anisognathus flavinucha, but the two differ markedly in voice and to lesser degree also in plumage. Their ranges are believed to be geographically isolated, although approaching each other closely. Present treatment as separate species provisional, pending genetic and further vocal analysis of the various taxa. Subspecies alamoris extremely similar to nominate and possibly better synonymized with it. Provisionally retained pending thorough review of all subspecies.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
venezuelanus (Hellmayr, 1913) - Northern Venezuela (coastal cordillera from Yaracuy east to Miranda).
antioquiae (von Berlepsch, 1912) - Northern end of western Andes, both slopes of central Andes (in Antioquia) and eastern slope (in Tolima), in northern Colombia.
victorini (Lafresnaye, 1842) - Andes of western Venezuela (southern Táchira) and western slope of eastern Andes of Colombia (from Santander south to head of Magdalena Valley, in Huila).
cyanopterus (Cabanis, 1866) - Andes of southern Colombia (western slope of central range southern from Quindío) and western Ecuador (south to Chimborazo and north-eastern Azuay).
alamoris (Chapman, 1925) - Southern Ecuador (western slope in southern Azuay, El Oro and western Loja).
baezae (Chapman, 1925) - Eastern slope of Andes in south-western Colombia (Nariño) and Ecuador (south to Morona-Santiago).
somptuosus (Lesson, 1831) - Eastern slope of Andes in extreme southern Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe) south to central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
flavinucha (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Eastern slope of Andes in Peru (from Puno) south to southern Bolivia (Chuquisaca). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bolivian Mountain-tanager (Anisognathus flavinucha).
