Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 2,100 - 3,600 m, occasionally 1,800 - 3,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly placed with Santa Marta Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus melanogenys) and Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus igniventris) in a separate genus, Poecilothraupis. May form a superspecies with Santa Marta Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus melanogenys), and in the past treated as conspecific.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • pallididorsalis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1952   -  Perijá Mts on northern Colombia-western Venezuela border.
  • melanops (von Berlepsch, 1893)   -  Andes of western Venezuela (in Trujillo, Mérida and northern Táchira).
  • tamae (Phelps & Gilliard, 1941)   -  Andes of western Venezuela (southern Táchira) and adjacent eastern Andes of Colombia (Norte de Santander and Boyacá).
  • olivaceiceps (von Berlepsch, 1912)   -  Colombia at northern end of western Andes (Antioquia) and in central Andes (south to Quindí­o and Tolima).
  • yariguierum Donegan & Avendaño, 2010   -  Colombia on western slope of eastern Andes in Santander (Serraní­a de Yaraguí­es).
  • intensus Meyer de Schauensee, 1951   -  South-western Colombia on eastern slope of western Andes (Valle and Cauca).
  • palpebrosus (Lafresnaye, 1847)   -  Southern Colombia (on both slopes in southern Cauca and Nariño) and eastern slope of Ecuador (south to at least Morona-Santiago).
  • caerulescens (Taczanowski & von Berlepsch, 1885)   -  Eastern slope of Andes in Ecuador (from Loja, or possibly farther north) and northern Peru (south to Cajamarca and northern Amazonas).
  • lacrymosus (Du Bus & Gisignies, 1846)   -  Eastern slope in Peru from Amazonas (south of R Marañón) south to Juní­n, Ayacucho and northern Cuzco).
