First Described (Guide)
(D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,500 - 3,200 m, occasionally up to 3,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Birds from Venezuela proposed as a separate subspecies, venezuelana, but validity of this requires confirmation.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • gigas (Bonaparte, 1851)   -  Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá, and Andes of southern Táchira) and adjacent eastern Andes of Colombia (south to Cundinamarca).
  • cucullata (Jardine & Selby, 1842)   -  Western and central Andes of Colombia south to Ecuador.
  • cyanonota von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896   -  Andes of northern and central Peru (Amazonas south to Juní­n).
  • saturata von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1906   -  Andes of south-eastern Peru (Cuzco and Puno).
  • montana (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Andes of northern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and western Santa Cruz).
  • venezuelana Aveledo & Perez, 1989   -  North-western Venezuela.
