Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 600 m, occasionally up to 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Geographical plumage variation complex.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • surinamus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Eastern and southern Venezuela (south-eastern Sucre, eastern Monagas, Delta Amacuro, Bolí­var and northern and central Amazonas), the Guianas, and Brazil north of R Amazon (eastern from R Negro).
  • brevipes Lafresnaye, 1846   -  South-eastern Colombia (from Meta and Guainí­a) and southern Venezuela (south-western Amazonas) south to eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru (north of R Amazon and R Marañón) and north-western Brazil north of Amazon.
  • napensis Lawrence, 1864   -  Eastern Peru south of R Marañón (south to R Ucayali) and western Brazil south of R Amazon (east to Acre and R Juruá).
  • insignis Hellmayr, 1906   -  Brazil south of Amazon (from R Madeira east to north-eastern Pará).
