Subtropical and tropical dry shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 500 m.

Argentina (B), Bolivia, Brazil (B), Colombia (B), French Guiana (B), Guyana (B), Paraguay (B), Peru (B), Suriname, Venezuela (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Molecular-genetic data indicate that present genus and Sericossypha are probably sister-taxa.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • hypoleuca Todd, 1916   -  North-western Colombia (Córdoba eastern in coastal region to Magdalena and southern in Magdalena Valley to southern Cesar) and northern Venezuela (Zulia and Lara east to Distrito Federal, Delta Amacuro and northern Bolí­var).
  • surinamensis Zimmer, JT, 1947   -  Guyana and Suriname.
  • pileata (Boddaert, 1783)   -  French Guiana and west-central Brazil (south of R Amazon between R Madeira and R Tapajós) south to extreme northern Bolivia.
  • interna Zimmer, JT, 1947   -  Central-northern Brazil in lower R Negro and upper R Branco regions.
  • nana von Berlepsch, 1912   -  North-eastern Peru and western Brazil (east to lower R Madeira).
  • caerulea (zu Wied-Neuwied, 1831)   -  Eastern and southern Brazil (south of R Amazon and east of R Tapajós), and extreme south-eastern Peru east to eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and north-western and north-eastern Argentina.
