Subspecies
Molecular data indicate that this genus and Chrysothlypis are closely related and probably sister-taxa, and that Heterospingus also is closely related to them. This species and Rufous-headed Tanager (Hemithraupis ruficapilla) hybridize to some degree in limited zone of contact in south-eastern Brazil, but do not intergrade.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigrigula (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Locally Venezuela (eastern of Andes) east to the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil northern of R Amazon.
  • roraimae (Hellmayr, 1910)   -  Cerro Roraima region of Venezuela and Guyana.
  • guirina (Sclater, PL, 1856)   -  Colombia in Cauca Valley (Antioquia south to Valle, once on Pacific slope in Valle), Magdalena Valley and eastern Andes (western slope from Santander south to Huila, and eastern slope in at least Boyacá and Cundinamarca and probably south to Caquetá), also Ecuador (western of Andes) and north-western Peru (north-western Tumbes).
  • huambina Stolzmann, 1926   -  Southern Colombia (Nariño), eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and western Brazil (eastern to R Madeira).
  • boliviana Zimmer, JT, 1947   -  Eastern Bolivia, north-western Argentina; probably also Mato Grosso, in Central Brazil.
  • amazonica Zimmer, JT, 1947   -  Central Brazil southern of R Amazon (between R Madeira and R Tapajós).
  • guira (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  East-central Brazil from R Tocantins east to Ceará and south to Goiás and north-western Bahia. Also extreme north-eastern Brazil from Paraíba to Alagoas.
