First Described (Guide)
(Lafresnaye, 1843)

Habitat
Humid and wet montane forest especially mossy higher elevation forest. From 1,400 - 3,200 m, but mainly 1,700 - 2,700 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

South-western Venezuela (Andes of southern Táchira); and Colombia locally in eastern Andes (Norte de Santander), locally on both slopes of central Andes (Caldasâ€"Tolima border), western Andes in Antioquia (La Linda, near city of Jardí­n) and head of Magdalena Valley in Huila south through Cauca and Nariño to Ecuador and central Peru (Juní­n).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status VU
Deforestation is the main threat.

Habits
Usually in groups of 4 - 8, though occasionally up to 20 travel together.

Voice
Very loud and piercing including a descending 'pieeu', 'peeiep' and 'pew-pew-pew...', recalling a jay.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Despite numerous earlier suggestions to the contrary, morphological and genetic data support placement of this species within present family. Molecular-genetic data indicate that present genus and Nemosia are probably sister-taxa.
