Subspecies
Recent molecular data indicate that present genus, Cissopis and Neothraupis are one another's closest relatives.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
aterrima Todd, 1912 - Colombia in middle (probably also lower) Cauca Valley, middle and upper Magdalena Valley, locally Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta area, Perija Mts, and east of Andes in llanos (Casanare south to Caquetá and Putumayo and east to Vichada, Guainía and Vaupés), eastern locally through parts of northern and southern Venezuela to western Guyana and northern Brazil (Cerro Uei-tepui).
melanopis (Latham, 1790) - Eastern Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and north-eastern Brazil.
grisea Cory, 1916 - Extreme southern Ecuador, and eastern Peru on eastern slope of Andes (very locally from Moyobamba and Huarandosa south to Marcapata).
olivina (Sclater, PL, 1865) - Extreme south-eastern Peru (Pampas del Heath) and adjacent northern Bolivia east to south-central Brazil (Mato Grosso).
amazonica Zimmer, JT, 1947 - Brazil south of R Amazon east to northern Ceará, then south to Mato Grosso, Sío Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and up eastern coast to Pernambuco.
