Habitat
Temperate forest. From sea-level - 2,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Bahamas, Belize, Canada (B), Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B).

Vagrant to Cayman Islands, Greenland, Jamaica, Martinique, Puerto Rico, St Pierre and Miquelon (P).

Population
Estimated population is 11,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Affinities within genus uncertain. May be sister species with Olive-capped Warbler (Setophaga pityophila) or Palm Warbler (Setophaga palmarum). Has hybridized with nominate subspecies of Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • pinus (Wilson, 1811)   -  Breeds south-eastern Canada (from extreme south-eastern Manitoba east to southern Quebec and southern New Brunswick) and eastern USA (eastern from Minnesota, Missouri and eastern Texas, excluding prairie regions of Midwest). Winters in southern part of breeding range and south to southern Florida.
  • florida (Maynard, 1906)   -  Southern Florida.
  • achrustera (Bangs, 1900)   -  North-western Bahamas (Grand Bahama, Abaco, New Providence and Andros).
  • chrysoleuca (Griscom, 1923)   -  Hispaniola.
