Proposed subspecies nigrilatera, described from Cerro Baúl (Oaxaca), in southern Mexico, considered synonymous with suttoni.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

• brunneinucha (Lafresnaye, 1839)   -  Eastern Mexico from San Luis Potosí­ and Veracruz south to north-eastern Oaxaca.
• apertus (Wetmore, 1942)   -  Sierra de Tuxtla, in southern Veracruz (Mexico).
• suttoni (Parkes, 1954)   -  Guerrero east to central Oaxaca, in southern Mexico.
• macrourus (Parkes, 1954)   -  Chiapas (southern Mexico) and south-western Guatemala.
• alleni (Parkes, 1954)   -  Honduras, northern El Salvador and western Nicaragua.
• elsae (Parkes, 1954)   -  Costa Rica and western and central Panama.
• frontalis Tschudi, 1844   -  Extreme eastern Panama, Colombia, western and northern Venezuela (except in Falcón and Yaracuy), Ecuador (except western slope from south-western Chimborazo south to north-western Azuay) and Peru.
• allinornatus (Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1949)   -  Sierra de San Luis (Falcón) and Sierra de Aroa (Yaracuy), in north-western Venezuela.
• inornatus (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1879)   -  South-central Ecuador from south-western Chimborazo south to north-western Azuay (vicinity of R Chimbo and R Chachan).
• nigrilatera (Rowley, JS, 1968)   -  Mountains of southern Mexico (Oaxaca).
