Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. From sea-level - 3,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, USA (B), Venezuela.

Introduced to Cuba (E).

Population
Estimated population is 3,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • hesperophilus (Oberholser, 1903)   -  Western USA (southern from Washington, east to northern Utah and central Arizona) south to north-western Mexico (Baja California and south to southern Sonora).
  • witti Grant, PR, 1964   -  Tres Marias Is, off western Mexico.
  • psaltria (Say, 1823)   -  West-central USA (Colorado and western Oklahoma) south to southern Mexico (central Veracruz and Oaxaca).
  • jouyi (Ridgway, 1898)   -  South-eastern Mexico (northern Yucatán Peninsula and Mujeres I) and north-western Belize.
  • colombianus Lafresnaye, 1843   -  Southern Mexico (Chiapas) south, discontinuously, to northern and western Colombia, northern Venezuela, northern and southern Ecuador and north-western Peru.
