Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest.

Range (Guide)
Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela.

Eastern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana; northern Brazil (north-eastern Amazonas, Pará, Amapá); apparent gap in records between these areas probably reflects inadequate sampling, but further study needed.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Until recently treated as conspecific with Rio Negro Gnatcatcher (Polioptila facilis) and Para Gnatcatcher (Polioptila paraensis) and all three, together with Iquitos Gnatcatcher (Polioptila clementsi), form a group that is probably sister to Slate-throated Gnatcatcher (Polioptila schistaceigula).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • facilis Zimmer, JT, 1942   -  North-western Amazonian Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rio Negro Gnatcatcher (Polioptila facilis).
  • guianensis Todd, 1920   -  Eastern Venezuela, the Guianas, northern Brazil.
  • paraensis Todd, 1937   -  South-eastern Amazonian Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Para Gnatcatcher (Polioptila paraensis).
  • attenboroughi Whittaker, Aleixo, Whitney, Smith & Klicka, 2013   -  South-western Amazonian Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Inambari Gnatcatcher (Polioptila attenboroughi).
